Enginuity and Achievements of Australia in the soap industry

There is nothing more Australin than the summertime. And as most Australians were out celebrating our national day, it reminded me of how unique this country is. So, I have compiled a short list of achievements and innovations that Australia has contributed to the worldwide arena of soap making.

  • Although, not originally Australian, Lever Brothers was a British soap manufacturing company that started using vegetable oils instead of animal fats to make soap. They opened an office in Sydney in 1888 and a factory in Balmain in 1899. They Bought in coconut oil form the Pacific Islands to make their soap.

  • Lano was the first brand to use lanolin, a natural by-product of wool, to create moisturizing soaps in Australia, starting from 1911.

  • Many Australian soap makers have incorporated native ingredients like eucalyptus, lemon myrtle, and Tea Tree oil into their soaps. Ingredients that the world could never have imagined existed if it weren’t for the discovery of this great southern continent.
