Imagine a land of Soap Trees and Fur Babies
Believe it or not there’s a soap tree. It grows in the deserts of North America, and yes, it yields soap!
Native Americans used the fiber of the soaptree to make sandals, belts, and cloth, among other items. They also ate the flowers.
Inside the trunk and roots of the plant is a soapy substance high in saponins, which is a substance that gets foamy when mixed with water.
In the past, this substance was used as soap and shampoo.
At least one tribe, the Zuni, used a mixture of soap made from yucca sap and ground aster to wash newborn babies to stimulate hair growth.
I guess you could say it gives a new meaning to the term fur babies!
